Understanding SEO analysis results

This guide helps you understand and act on your SEO Analysis results. For an overview of the feature, see SEO Analysis Overview. For a complete list of all tests, see Complete List of SEO Tests.

Understanding the SEO Score

Your SEO score is displayed as a percentage (0-100%) in a circular indicator at the top of the metabox. The score is calculated based on all the issues, improvements, and good practices found during analysis.

Score Calculation

The score starts at 100% and is adjusted based on findings:
  • Errors – Deduct 5% per error (maximum 50% deduction)
  • Warnings – Deduct 2.5% per warning (maximum 30% deduction)
  • Improvements – Deduct 1% per improvement (maximum 15% deduction)
  • Good Practices – Add 0.5% per good practice (maximum 10% bonus)

Score Ranges

  • 80-100% (Green) – Excellent SEO optimization. Your page is well-optimized with minimal issues.
  • 60-79% (Yellow) – Good optimization with room for improvement. Address warnings and improvements to boost your score.
  • 0-59% (Red) – Needs significant SEO work. Focus on fixing critical errors first, then address warnings.

Understanding Result Categories

Analysis results are organized into three main categories:

  • Missing meta description
  • All images missing alt text
  • Broken links
  • Page set to noindex
Action: Fix these first as they have the biggest impact on your SEO score and search visibility.
Warning
Important issues that should be addressed. Examples:
  • Focus keyword not in title
  • Content too short
  • No H1 heading
  • Some images missing alt text
  • Duplicate titles or meta descriptions
Action: Address these after fixing critical errors. They impact user experience and SEO performance.
Improvement (Low Priority)
Suggestions for optimization. Examples:
  • Consider adding internal links
  • Content could be longer
  • Add structured data
  • Add Twitter Cards
  • Consider adding rel=”author” links
Action: These are optional but can help improve your overall SEO performance. Address when you have time.

Good

This section highlights what you’re doing well. These are positive SEO elements that are properly implemented:
  • Focus keyword appears in title
  • Good content length
  • Proper H1 heading structure
  • All images have alt text
  • Internal links present
  • Structured data implemented
Action: Keep doing these! They contribute positively to your SEO score.

How to Fix Common Issues

Here’s how to address the most common SEO issues:

Missing Title Tag

  • Problem: No title tag is set for the page
  • Fix: Set a title in your SEO plugin (Yoast, RankMath, etc.) or use WordPress’s default title
  • Best Practice: Keep titles between 50-60 characters, include your focus keyword, and make them compelling

Missing Meta Description

  • Problem: No meta description is set
  • Fix: Add a meta description in your SEO plugin settings
  • Best Practice: Keep descriptions between 150-160 characters, include your focus keyword, and write compelling copy that encourages clicks

Content Too Short

  • Problem: Content has fewer than 300 words
  • Fix: Expand your content to provide more value to readers
  • Best Practice: Aim for at least 300 words, but focus on quality and relevance over word count

No H1 Heading

  • Problem: No H1 heading found in content
  • Fix: Add an H1 heading to your content (most themes use the post title as H1, but check your theme)
  • Best Practice: Use only one H1 per page, include your focus keyword, and make it descriptive

Images Missing Alt Text

  • Problem: Images don’t have alt attributes or have empty alt text
  • Fix: Add descriptive alt text to all images in the WordPress media library or directly in your content
  • Best Practice: Write descriptive alt text that explains what the image shows. If the image is decorative, use alt=””

Focus Keyword Not in Title

  • Problem: Your focus keyword doesn’t appear in the title tag
  • Fix: Update your SEO title to include the focus keyword naturally
  • Best Practice: Place the focus keyword near the beginning of the title for better SEO impact

Duplicate Title or Meta Description

  • Problem: The same title or meta description is used on multiple pages
  • Fix: Make each title and meta description unique for every page
  • Best Practice: Each page should have a unique title and description that accurately represents its content

Broken Links

  • Problem: Links on your page return errors or redirect
  • Fix: Update or remove broken links. For redirected links, update to point directly to the final destination
  • Best Practice: Regularly check and maintain your links. Use 301 redirects for moved content

No Structured Data

  • Problem: No structured data (JSON-LD, microdata, or RDFa) found
  • Fix: Add structured data using a plugin or manually. Many SEO plugins include structured data features
  • Best Practice: Use JSON-LD format for structured data. It’s easier to implement and maintain

Prioritizing Fixes

When you have multiple issues, prioritize them in this order:

  1. Critical Errors First – Fix missing titles, meta descriptions, and broken links immediately
  2. Warnings Second – Address focus keyword issues, content length, and heading structure
  3. Improvements Third – Work on structured data, social media tags, and other optimizations
  4. Maintain Good Practices – Keep doing what’s working well

Understanding Google Search Console Insights

If you have Google Search Console connected, the analysis includes additional insights:

Low CTR with Good Position

Keywords ranking in positions 1-3 but getting few clicks. This suggests your title or meta description could be more compelling.
Action: Improve your titles and meta descriptions to increase click-through rates.

High Impressions, Low Clicks

Keywords appearing frequently in search results but not getting clicks.
Action: Review and optimize your titles and meta descriptions. Consider improving your content to better match search intent.

Keywords Not in Content

Keywords bringing traffic to your page that aren’t found in your content.
Action: Consider naturally incorporating these keywords into your content or creating dedicated content for them.

Keyword Cannibalization

Multiple pages competing for the same keywords.
Action: Consolidate content or differentiate pages to target different keyword variations.

Long-tail Opportunities

Long-tail keyword opportunities that could drive targeted traffic.
Action: Create content targeting these long-tail keywords or update existing content to include them.

Content Freshness

Suggestions to update content based on trending keywords.
Action: Update your content to include trending keywords and refresh publication dates.

Question Queries

Question-based search queries you could target.
Action: Create FAQ sections or content that answers these questions.

Reanalyzing After Fixes

After making changes to your content:

  1. Save your changes
  2. If content has changed, you’ll see a yellow notice: “Content has changed. Click to reanalyze.”
  3. Click the “Reanalyze” button to run a fresh analysis
  4. Review your updated SEO score and remaining issues
Note: The system automatically detects when content has changed and prompts you to reanalyze. Old results are always available until you run a new analysis.
